The history of networked communication and digital technology is, for the most part, a history of pushing the limits of physics and abstracting the complexities of supply chains. What can technologists gain from studying the infrastructural foundations of a networked world -- and the tens of thousands of year long geologic processes that made that world possible? This talk will explore the centuries-old history of computers starting with the formation and discovery of rare earth elements and projecting into deep space futures.
